Reboot

Replenish, Re-Govern and the Re-Wilding of the apocalyptic history of Earth, where we take the doom-and-gloom and flip it into positive reimaginings. Using backcasting, hard science fiction and creative performance, we turn extinction into inspiration and build hopeful narratives for schools, communities and beyond.

What

We imagine this project as a way of reshaping the Apocalypse Theme into something more constructive. Instead of focusing only on Earth’s history of extinctions and possible future catastrophes, we use backcasting: imagining hard science fiction scenarios of risk, then working backwards to identify steps toward better outcomes. While this theme is engaging, a focus on fear and crisis can alienate schools and communities seeking positivity.

To counter this, we frame the project with “re-” concepts such as Replenish, Reboot, Re-Govern and Re-Wilding. These acknowledge danger but emphasise renewal. Students begin by identifying risks, then use research and science fiction to reimagine them. In Writers Rooms they create Beats, Scenes, Episodes and Sagas, transforming apocalyptic themes into positive scenarios of governance, ecology and technology.

The results can take varied forms. One is a silent movie style: 16-second AI-generated clips intercut with text prompts, performed with live music in schools or streamed globally. For instance, 114 students could form 42 groups, their work combined into seven shorts for a festival with prizes. Other outputs include hybrid theatre, blending live dialogue with AI visuals, or themed explorations such as the “restaurant at the end of the universe” focusing on food and sustainability. All formats use backcasting to explore risks while celebrating resilience and imagining hopeful futures.
