Hitchhiker Vision

This is my version of the Hitchhiker Vision - that I was prematurely prompted to post to the Hitchhiker Theatre Group. It is work in progress - but not much changed since the projects inception a couple of years ago.

For Hitchhikers, the shared highest value is clear, direct, and wildly improbable. We aim to vibe-code the future infrastructure for the planet: a new Earth operating system.

This vision sits inside a lineage of stories and frameworks. It draws from the Hitchhikers Mythology, with its playful tale of The Mice and the search for the answer to everything. It also draws from Buckminster Fuller and his vision of Spaceship Earth, from James Lovelock and the living planetary imagination of Gaia and the Novascene, and from others who have tried to help humanity see the Earth as a whole.

We use Imagination as a practical method. We backcast the future. We ask what kind of world, civilisation, and operating system might actually be worth building, and then work backwards to discover the steps that could make it real.

We do this in small conversational assemblies, often shaped around the number 42, not only as a joke, but as a scale that is human enough for conversation and strange enough to remind us that seriousness need not be solemn.

We use Humour and Play to open the imagination. They help loosen the grip of inevitability. They make space for new possibilities, stranger questions, and more creative designs. They help people who would otherwise feel excluded by the language of systems, law, or technology to enter the process as full participants.

We use Law, Software, and the Art of the Possible to turn imagination into form. The aim is not only to dream, but to deliver iterative instantiations of this operating system. In our terms, that means drafting and evolving a Living Constitution.

For each of us - their may be an element of this collaborative experiment that excites. For all there should be simple ways to contribute. Over the first year we run an artist led, creative experiment to draft this constitution for hitchhikers.earth - one which is guided by a set of principles and based in a citizen assembly like quest (the game) to ensure that no human or non-human being is left out of the process. Each year we fail, and explore how we can do it better. Each year we put out best results on the world stage. Playfully, yet sincerely. That is the spirit of radical humility.
