This year, the Academy’s focus is the creation of a **free, financially sustainable, mutually owned, global alternative** to existing social media platforms. Recognising the substantial technical and societal challenges involved, the Academy aims not only to specify and build new federated platforms (drawing upon the existing work in the Fediverse and indie media spheres) but also to establish sustainable financial mechanisms and thoughtful governance practices.
